Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Care in BC

Answers to the most common questions we receive about arborist services, permits, assessments, and tree care in British Columbia.

An ISA Certified Arborist is a tree care professional who has met the experience and education requirements set by the International Society of Arboriculture and passed a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, diagnostics, pruning, safety, and risk assessment. The certification must be renewed every three years through continuing education, ensuring practitioners stay current with industry best practices. When you hire an ISA Certified Arborist, you are working with someone whose knowledge has been independently verified by the leading international authority in tree care.
In most BC municipalities, yes. Kelowna, Vancouver, West Kelowna, and other cities require tree removal permits for trees above a certain diameter (typically 20 cm DBH, or diameter at breast height). The permit process usually requires a professional arborist report justifying the removal. Fines for unauthorized tree removal can range from $500 to $10,000 or more depending on the municipality and the tree's significance. We recommend contacting your local municipal office or our team before removing any tree to confirm whether a permit is required.
Tree risk assessment costs vary based on the number of trees, site complexity, and the level of assessment required. A basic Level 1 limited visual assessment for a single tree typically starts around $300 to $500. A detailed Level 2 assessment with a written report ranges from $500 to $1,500. Level 3 advanced assessments involving resistograph testing or Airspade root investigation may cost $1,500 or more depending on the scope. We provide detailed quotes after an initial consultation so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.
A Tree Protection Zone is a designated area around a tree, calculated based on the trunk diameter, where construction activities such as excavation, grading, material storage, and heavy equipment operation are restricted. The purpose is to prevent root damage and soil compaction that can kill a tree months or even years after the damage occurs. TPZs are typically required by municipal bylaws during construction and must be physically fenced with signage before work begins. An arborist determines the appropriate TPZ radius based on species, size, health, and site conditions.
Call for emergency tree services when a tree or large branch has fallen on a structure, vehicle, or roadway. Also call when a tree is actively leaning or splitting and poses an immediate threat to people or property, when storm damage has left hanging branches over walkways or occupied areas, or when root plate lifting is visible after a wind event. If you are unsure whether a situation is an emergency, it is always better to call and describe what you see. Sylva Environmental offers 24/7 emergency response at (778) 583-8986.
A resistograph is a micro-drilling device that measures the resistance of wood as a thin needle penetrates the trunk. The tool produces a graph showing density variations inside the tree, revealing internal decay, cavities, and compromised wood that are invisible from the outside. The drill hole is only 3mm in diameter and causes no meaningful damage to the tree. Results are interpreted by a qualified arborist and used to make informed decisions about tree retention, risk mitigation, or removal. Resistograph testing is considered a Level 3 advanced assessment tool.
Sylva Environmental serves the Central Okanagan including Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland, Summerland, Lake Country, and Vernon. We also serve the Lower Mainland including Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Squamish, and surrounding communities. For projects in other BC locations, we are happy to discuss availability on a case-by-case basis. Travel fees may apply for locations outside our primary service areas.
Yes. Our arborist reports are written to meet the documentation standards required by insurance companies. We provide detailed assessments of tree failures, storm damage, and property damage with photographs, risk analysis, and professional opinions on causation. Our ISA and TRAQ credentials ensure reports are accepted by insurers and hold up in disputes. We can also provide expert testimony if required for claim resolution.
A single-tree visual assessment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes on site. Multi-tree inventories or detailed assessments requiring resistograph testing may take half a day or longer depending on the number of trees and site conditions. The written report is usually delivered within 5 to 10 business days after the site visit. Rush turnaround is available for urgent situations such as emergency risk assessments or time-sensitive development permits.
An Airspade is a specialized tool that uses compressed air to excavate soil around tree roots without damaging them. Unlike mechanical digging, the air stream breaks up soil particles while leaving roots, utilities, and other buried structures intact. Airspade investigations are used to assess root health, identify root decay, map structural root systems before construction, and evaluate soil conditions beneath the surface. This technology is particularly valuable for trees near construction sites, trees with suspected root problems, and pre-construction root mapping.
Yes. A significant portion of our work involves supporting development projects. We provide pre-construction tree assessments, tree preservation plans, TPZ planning and monitoring, arborist reports for development permit applications, and ongoing site supervision during construction. We work closely with developers, engineers, landscape architects, and municipal planners to balance development goals with tree protection requirements. Our reports are formatted to meet the specific submission requirements of municipalities across BC.
Absolutely. We are well-versed in tree protection bylaws across BC municipalities including Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vancouver, North Vancouver, and others. We prepare arborist reports that meet specific municipal requirements, assist with tree removal permit applications, develop tree management plans for strata and commercial properties, and provide expert guidance on compliance with local regulations. If you have received a notice of violation or need to navigate a complex permitting situation, our team can help you understand your options and respond appropriately.
